embrace the following articles of faith, which guide our worship, learning, teaching and living. We believe there is one true, living, everlasting God. We believe in the Trinity – God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. The three persons are mutually, reciprocally related but have one essence or core. The Triune God provides us with an example of how we are to live in relationships that reflect the mutual, reciprocal, interdependent and loving relationship between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God, who was born of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus lived so we would have an earthly example of what it means to be a loving servant of God, and that he died as the Perfect Sacrifice on the Cross so that we could be forgiven of our sins. He defeated death and rose on the third day and returned to his Heavenly Father, so he could intercede on our behalf. We believe in the Holy Spirit, who is the life sustaining force that moves us into a loving relationship with God. We are called to allow the Holy Spirit to dwell within us so that Jesus can use us to transform the world through Christ–centered relationships and the works we do in His name. We believe Scripture is the unique witness to the liberating and reconciling activity of God that should be read for our instruction and comfort. We believe Scripture is the perfect revelation of God to an imperfect humanity. We humbly acknowledge that our understanding of God’s revelation, through Scripture, is influenced by our own personal and cultural context and we work very hard to continuously seek God’s truth in an open minded manner. We believe there are two ordinances in the church: (1) Baptism and (2) Communion. Christian baptism is our initiation into the Christian life and marks the beginning of our journey of faith and discipleship into a covenant community. The Lord’s Supper marks God’s continued sharing of life and love that serves to strengthen the community and motivate it to serve others. It is a concrete sign and seal of God’s promise of a new, liberated, and reconciled humanity in a new heaven and a new earth. We believe Grace is a gift from God; it is God’s unmerited favor. Grace demonstrates how God gives to humanity freely, which is best exemplified in the gift of Jesus Christ. God’s grace should make us long to be delivered from sin, move us towards repentance and make us yearn to live a life that is pleasing to God. We believe that personal salvation always involves Christian mission and service to the world. We believe that our spiritual walk not only involves sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ, but requires us to use our gifts to ensure that all of God’s people live freely in a world that is just, loving, and fair. We believe that living a holy lifestyle does not just involve personal piety, but a love for your neighbor, a refusal to tolerate injustice, and a commitment to loving others as Jesus loves us. |
